Identification
Larger than mice, 13 to 18 inches including the tail, with coarse brown to gray fur.
Habitat
Burrow at ground level near foundations, woodpiles, and gardens. Prefer being close to the ground rather than climbing.
Why They're A Risk
Gnaw through wood and soft materials, carry disease, and contaminate stored food and insulation.
Signs To Watch For
Burrow holes near the foundation, gnawed wood or wiring, and greasy rub marks along walls and beams.
